Best Phone Cards to Call Japan

Japan is another country I travel often on my consulting gig. So just like anywhere else I travel to I’ve made a lot of really great friends. To keep in touch with them as well as my business associates I use several different kinds of phone cards from different phone card providers. I use one card to call a telephone land line in Japan and the other I use for calling a mobile number in Japan. You’ll see why below.

The first card I recommend is for calling a telephone land line in Japan. This phone card is called “Just Call” and is only available from a phone card provider called Speedy Pin. I recommend this company because they are the only phone card provider who offers a 100% Guarantee as well as great rates.

With this card it will cost you 1.8¢ per minute with absolutely no fees to call a land line in Japan from the Continental USA. To check out how much it will cost from your area you can click Speedy Pin Phone Card to Call Japan. This card also has toll-free access. The 1.8¢ per minute is a great calling rate. However if you use the “Just Call“ phone card to call a mobile line in Japan it will cost you 13.9¢ per minute. The rates for dialing to a mobile number is not bad considering it’s to Japan, but for cheaper alternatives check below.

If you know you will be dialing to a mobile number the majority of the time I recommend that you take a look at a company called Nobelcom. As you can see below, their rates for calling a mobile number in Japan is better. Don’t worry, I’m going teach you which one to choose for your needs. The rates below are based on calls made to Japan from USA

The only difference between these 4 phone cards is just the maintenance fee rates. Most of you may know by now that I advocate only buying phone cards with no fees. But maintenance fees are acceptable because you can adapt it to your needs and take advantage of the lower rates. You’ll see what I mean below.

  1. Hello Japan Cellular – .99¢ maintenance fee per week / 4 minute billing increment
  2. Talk Japan Cellular – .69¢ maintenance fee per week / 2 minute billing increment
  3. Call Japan Cellular – .49¢ maintenance fee per month / 1 minute billing increment
  4. 1 Second Japan Cellular – No maintenance fee / 1 second billing increment

You can see the maintenance fee by clicking on “Phone Card Details”. Billing increment or minute rounding is best explained this way. If you’re using “Hello Japan Cellular” and you make a call that last 2 minutes and 50 seconds your call will still be billed at 4 minutes.

So which one should you choose? Well that depends on how often you’ll be calling and the duration of your calls to the mobile number in Japan.

If you know you will be making a high volume of calls within a short time span, you should choose either “Hello Japan Cellular” or “Talk Japan Cellular“. Both of these cards have low rates but make sure you use the cards up fast or else you’re going to lose out when the maintenance fee starts chomping down on your phone card’s remaining value. What I do is, when I know I will be making a massive amount of calls within the week, I buy either of these cards and use it up before the week is over. By doing so I have taken advantage of the lower rates and avoided the weekly maintenance fee.

So now as you know, if you’re going to be making calls sporadically in a few months or up to a year it is best to stick with “Call Japan Cellular“ or “1 Second Japan Cellular“. Even though “Call Japan Cellular” has a .49¢ monthly maintenance fee it is still considered low. However, it’s the better choice if you know you are able to finish the card up before the month is up.

And that’s it. Not as hard as you think right? To check these card’s out yourself you can visit Noblecom Phone Cards to Call Japan. I always encourage people to check out the phone card’s full details for themselves. One final tip is to use local the local access numbers that Nobelcom will provide for you. If you use their toll free access they’ll charge an extra penny per call.
