Phone Card Buyer’s Guide

After a brief work/visit to the United Kingdom, a German colleague of mine, who has been working there at the time has been relocated to the United States. He asked me which phone card companies has the best rates for calling his family back in Germany.

For Germany I recommend two different phone cards from two different phone card companies. The reason why is because one card has the best reliable rates for calling a land line and the other has the best reliable rates for calling a mobile number in Germany. Yes, if you don’t know by now, phone cards have different rates for calling a land line and mobile line. Calling an international mobile number cost more in most cases.

For calling a land line in Germany I recommend the phone card called “Just Call”, here’s a screen shot I took off of Speedy Pin’s website:

Just Call phone card has no fees at all. Which is why I recommend it. Using the Just Call phone card to call a mobile number Germany cost 23.9¢ per minute. But I have a better alternative.

For calling a mobile number in Germany I suggest Nobelcom. Below is a screen shot I took off of Nobelcom’s website:

As you can see the rates from Nobelcom are much better for calling a mobile number in Germany. I’ll show you which one to choose of course. Now, Nobelcom’s phone cards has one fee only. And that fee is a maintenance fee. Normally I don’t recommend people to buy phone cards with fees but maintenace fees are okay since there is away around them, which I’ll show you. Maintenance fees are deducted off of the remaining value of your phone card in a specified time frame. Below you can see a list of the maintenance fees attached to the cards:

• Hello Germany Cellular – .99¢ per week
• Talk Germany Cellular – .69¢ per week
• Call Germany Cellular – .49¢ per month
• 1 Second Germany Cellular – No maintenance fee

I’m sure you’ve noticed by now the lower the call per minute rate, the higher the maintenance. So which one should you choose? That depends on how often you will be making your calls. For example if you know you’ll be making a high volume of calls within a week then you should choose “Hello Germany Cellular”. By choosing this card and finishing it in one week then you will have taken advantage of the 9.9¢ call per minute rate and avoided the .99¢ per week maintenance fee.

Another example is if you know you’ll be spreading your calls through out 1 month then choose “Call Germany Cellular”.
